Vertuo capsules are sealed with an aluminium lid, and getting that lid off cleanly is the fiddly part of both jobs. Drop a used capsule into the REVU tool, twist, and the lid separates from the body in one motion.

Refilling your capsules? This is step one.
You can't buy empty Vertuo capsules — you reuse the ones you've already brewed, sealed with a WayCap or Sealpod silicone lid. The rim of the capsule is what that new lid seals against, so it matters that the old lid comes off without tearing or distorting it. Peeling the foil by hand works, but it's slow and easy to bend the rim, and a bent rim leaks.

Recycling them instead? Same tool, same motion.
Separating the capsule into its parts is what makes it recyclable at all. Once it's open: the aluminium can be recycled with other aluminium, and the coffee grounds go in the compost. Useful for working through a last batch of single-use pods, and for the occasional capsule that finally gives up after months of refilling.
