Working out which Nespresso® Vertuo machine you own — or which one to buy — is harder than it should be. Nespresso has put more than a dozen Vertuo models through the Australian market since 2014, retired most of them, and kept the names very similar to one another. This guide sorts out what actually differs between them, which ones you can still buy here, and what they cost today.
Machine prices below are Nespresso Australia's listed price, checked on 28 July 2026. The same machines are often sold for less through Big W, Myer, Amazon and Harvey Norman.
WHICH VERTUO MACHINES CAN YOU BUY IN AUSTRALIA RIGHT NOW?
Four core machines, plus two milk-focused models above them. Everything else in the Vertuo range has been discontinued — if you are comparing against a VertuoPlus or an Evoluo, skip down to older Vertuo models.

Above those sit two milk machines: the Vertuo Lattissima at $599, with a detachable 0.5 L milk carafe that pours milk coffees at one touch, and the Vertuo Creatista at $1,099, with an automatic steam wand and six adjustable settings. Both make seven coffee sizes and are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
Each of the four core machines also comes bundled with an Aeroccino3 milk frother: Pop $329, Pop+ $369, Next $389, Up $439. The Aeroccino3 on its own is $109, so every bundle saves you $19 against buying the two separately. There is also a Starbucks® Vertuo Pop bundle at $360.
VERTUO POP vs VERTUO NEXT
This is the comparison most people arrive here for, and the honest answer is that the coffee is identical. Both machines use the same capsules and the same Centrifusion brewing, so what you are really choosing between is capacity and connectivity.
- Choose the Pop ($239) if bench space matters most. It is the narrowest machine in the range and $60 cheaper.
- Choose the Next ($299) if you make more than a couple of coffees at a time. Double the water tank, a bigger used-capsule bin, and a seventh cup size.
The Pop's 0.5 L tank is the real trade-off. On the 230 mL Mug setting that is two coffees before you refill.
VERTUO UP vs VERTUO NEXT
The Up is the newest machine in the Australian range and sits $50 above the Next. Two things justify the gap:
- Capacity. A 1.4 L tank against 1.1 L, and an 18-capsule bin against 10. If you are emptying the Next's bin every few days, the Up nearly doubles that interval.
- Speed. The Up heats up in 3 seconds. The Next takes 30.
The Up's tank also rotates to sit beside or behind the machine, which takes its width from 22 cm down to 12 cm. The Next's advantage is the recycled-plastic build. Neither makes a better cup of coffee than the other.
CENTRIFUSION
The Vertuo design does not use a pump for extraction like other machines. Instead the range uses a feature called Centrifusion. After the capsule is inserted, it spins at up to 7,000 rotations per minute, blending ground coffee with water to produce a thick, foamy crema. The machine reads a barcode on the rim of each capsule to set the water volume and spin speed, which is why Vertuo capsules and Original Line capsules are not interchangeable.
OLDER VERTUO MODELS YOU MIGHT ALREADY OWN
Nespresso no longer sells the machines below in Australia, but plenty are still in kitchens and they all take the same capsules as the current range.
In 2014 Nespresso released the first-generation VertuoLine. It did not come highly recommended, largely because the coffee was not hot enough for most users. Nespresso addressed that with the Evoluo in 2015, which brewed hotter and added a larger water tank and used-capsule drawer.
In 2017 the VertuoPlus arrived with a motorised head and a water tank that swivelled to the right, the left or behind the machine body. Machines from this line are known for leakage issues. The VertuoPlus Deluxe added a slimmer body, a larger reservoir and metal rims on the cup holder.
The Vertuo Next followed in 2020 and was later joined by two variants: the Next Premium, which swapped in a metal cup support and chrome accents, and the Next Deluxe, which added a stainless steel pourer. Only the base Next is still sold.
More recently the compact Vertuo Pop joined the range, followed by the Pop+ and then the Vertuo Up.
THE AEROCCINO3 MILK FROTHER
The Aeroccino3 ($109) makes hot or cold frothed milk and comes in black or white. Press the button once and wait 70 to 80 seconds for hot froth. Hold it for two seconds until it lights up blue for cold froth, which takes about 60 seconds.
The Barista frother — the touchscreen, app-connected model that used to turn up in Vertuo bundles — is no longer listed in Nespresso Australia's milk frother range. If you want automatic milk texturing now, it is built into the Lattissima and the Creatista instead.
PODS
Nespresso Vertuo capsules are dome shaped, so they do not fit Original Line machines, and Original Line capsules do not fit Vertuo. Vertuo capsules come in 40 mL Espresso, 80 mL Double Espresso, 150 mL Gran Lungo, 230 mL Mug and 414 mL Alto, with a 335 mL Cold Brew size on the newer machines.
WHICHEVER VERTUO YOU CHOOSE, THE PODS COST THE SAME
Every machine on this page takes the same Nespresso Vertuo capsules, at roughly 80c to $1.10 each. The machine is a one-off purchase. The capsules are what you pay for every morning after that — at two coffees a day, about $580 to $800 a year.
